The cold was bitter and wild.
It felt like Winter had arrived
even though the leaves were
still falling from the trees.
Early would be the word for sure.
Not even the birds had finished their flights.
Not one animal was prepared.
Not even me.
The boots were still in the attic.
The gloves and hats in the upper closet.
My coat was from Summer.
Still I managed to venture out into this fluffy world.
I had to get to the bird feeders.
They hang with silence without me.
Cold my fingers knew well.
Those gloves would have been friends today.
Scoops of seed made the birds visit.
As I walked back with snow in my shoes,
I noticed my cats sitting in the window.
Both watching with delight.
Their tails swinging back and forth.
I'd done my job even in the snow.

I wouldn't be prepared for that either!
Lucky kitty cats! Nice Magpie!
Brrr. We've been digging wool sweaters and mittens out of the cedar chest here in southern New Mexico and are bundling up in winter clothes we haven't worn since living in New Hampshire!
Keep making those birdies happy. You are such a good soul to all your animal friends.
My girls like Bird TV, too.
Ack Ack Ack......
Oh, good for you! The snowfall record here has been broken for November. Two & 1/2 feet and still coming. My boots aren't tall enough!
Yes feed the birds and then with the cat watch them come. Such a lovely way to spend a winter morning.
the kitties need their entertainment.
It's not good when it catches you unawares. Nice Magpie.
We can't relate even though we try....our mama can though cuz she was born and raised in South Dakota where she says they got "tons of snow and cold weather in the winter".
We purray y'all will stay safe and warm. xxxxxxxxx
Such a lovely post, wonderful writing. The cold? Not so wonderful! We've yet to get snow here, but we're sure we'll get the white stuff very soon.
BTW, the mom doesn't have a car because her single income can't pay the bills and support the fur kids, plus pay for a vehicle. LOL. :-)
"Buster Joseph get out of that tree!" When my feline sneaks out for live action tv that is what I have to yell and he actually looks back, meows and then does it. Loved your magpie!
We like Bird TV here too! I am so happy you got your shipment of snow. I am trying hard to keep up sending it to all of my friends. There will be more on the way!
Lovely post and poem. I have been trying to get ready for winter, stacking firewood, buttoning up the house from drafts, putting out the Christmas light displaym (a bit Charlie Brown, but I tried.) A new addition is an electric reindeer out front. He is glorious.
kitties inside warm and cozy...and happy birds....very nice...bkm

We like Bird TV as well as Chipmunk TV. I like your story, too!

I'm not quite ready yet either!
I'll bet the birds were so appreciative!
My little bird friend are enjoying breakfast in the snow outside my window, as we speak!
