The Table would glow

My Dad had an old camping lamp. Dark green with rusty parts. I remember how he took that out when we needed light from the darkened woods. It always amazed me how he put that mesh cap on and lit it. The flint would sometimes take forever but just when you thought it wasn't going to light, it would. The table would glow with the turns of his hands. Add the warmth of the big fire and a great evening was had.

Those are my memories of camping. The new light that I have is easier to use. One even uses batteries. I bring both just in case. I don't use my Dad's lamp but I would if it still worked. I bet if he was here he'd know someway to make it.

With Fall arriving so fast this year, it might be a cooler one than usual. I  put votive lights on the  mantle to mark the way. Just like my Dad did in the woods, oh so many years ago.

I keep tin candle lamps with four glass sides inside the house in case of a power outage. My house is really =old so I don't bur candles as a rule, in just candle holders, but these lamps work well as back ups for lightbulbs.

Your dad sounds like a great guy, a bit like mine too. He still fixes things that I know someone else would just toss.

Great magpie!

Thanks for sharing such a wonderful memory. I too enjoy candlelight during the Fall Season, seems to go along with this nesting feeling I am having. BTW how is Bella doing?

I love votive candles in the winter. There is something about fire light.

What a lovely lamp and story to go with it! Brought back amazing childhood memories of camping up at Mt. Rainer...in June... with snow falling outside our tent!

Beautiful memories. I know those lamps and remember how my father, too, could fix things that others couldn't. Nice magpie!

Lovely memory.

There comes a time in your life when you walk away from all of the drama and the people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh. Forget the bad and focus on the good. Love the people who treat you right and pray for those who don’t. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is part of life, getting back up is living.
