Heart Day Memories

When I was in college, I had a sort of little brother.
We met at a party and since I was a year older,
we starting calling each other brother and sister.
Every time we saw each other, he'd give me a big hug.
He'd ask for advice on the current girl he liked.
Which I'd give him, if I knew her.
It was kind of fun.
He cared but not in a boyfriend way.
At least, that's what I thought.

Valentine's Day came to my dorm.
Lots of flowers were delivered to the girls.
One was for me.
I was shocked.
I didn't have a boyfriend or even a boy like.

Ends up, he had sent them to me.
With a pretend name.
Something like, Mr. Heart.

The problem was, he did have a girlfriend
that lived in my dorm and was part of my
sorority group.

Everyone was asking me who sent the flowers.
I called him to see if it was him.
He finally said it was.

Boy, was his girlfriend mad when she found out.
No, they didn't go out much longer after that.

Did we ever ? No.

We were brother and sister to each other for two years.
By my Senior year, we didn't do much together.
One time, we did try to see if there was something else there
but I'd decided that there was nothing there.

I don't even remember the last time I talked to him
before I graduated from college.

Been a long long time since I've thought of him.

I got the University info booklet in the mail last week.
Someone I knew really well had past away.
It made me think.
So, I looked my little brother up and there he was.

He lives about four hours away.
Is a city councilman.
Married .. I think .. to one of the girls he was dating.

The photo I found still has that spark that he had
back when I first met him.

I thought of maybe calling and saying
Happy Heart Day from your big sister.

Only that would be wrong, to intrude,
into his life now.

But, the thought of him as this young man
and now knowing that he's had,
I think, a nice life, well,
 that's all any heart would
need to find out.
That someone you once
cared about has had a nice life.

And, that is my Heart Day Story for today.
Nothing fancy .. just from the heart.

There comes a time in your life when you walk away from all of the drama and the people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh. Forget the bad and focus on the good. Love the people who treat you right and pray for those who don’t. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is part of life, getting back up is living.
