Old Dogs ... Update

Monday Update
Just waiting to take Bella to the vet
for her xrays. They have to sedate her
so no food this meowning. That went over well.
The meds they gave her on Friday have helped.
She still can't use her back leg though.
Will let you know more ... when I know more.

Friday afternoon Update
Bella is ok but still can't walk on her leg
Scheduled for Xrays Monday morning
I'm going over to the vet now for meds
that she will take til they get her in
And, I think even if she's all better
That this is the next necessary step
(sorry for the bun)

Update On My Old Dog Bella
All we can figure is that she fell or repinched a nerve
As of two pm on Wednesday, she was fine
Was running around with Maddy Jean in the back yard
Now, a three legged beauty
She seems more able to get up and down the stairs
Still not using her leg but seems in a better mood
No crying when touching the leg
Mr. Boatman and I had that talk
We decided we would wait to see if this gets better
Not put her through the vet, which sometimes makes her worse
I'm sure most of you know what I mean
If she's not improved by next week
I will get her in and spend the money to have them tell me
That there's nothing I can do
I'm going to be looking up specialists today
This morning she was in the back yard and
I had to go out with a flashlight
I found her and she got up on her own and came inside
She's really not that old .. only eight
I paid for her hips and eyes guarantee .. papers
This is the 2nd labrador I've had
That has back leg troubles
I'm no where close to giving up on her
It's just going to be a long battle
Yesterday, was a sad day for us
Cause as much as I like to pretend that everything is fine
And I do like to do that
Everything is not

This is my OLD DOG BELLA
She has trouble with her back leg
Yesterday, she started to hop on three legs
Leaving her bad one in the air
We gave her more of her nerve meds
She has nerve pain and old lady arthritis

The next step is to take her in for x rays
The vet said it would show him what exactly is going on
He did say that there wasn't much he'd be able to do
So, I wait and see if this is just a day thing or if
I need to take her in for a possible mri
Or whatever they do
Just to have someone tell me I have an old dog
I forgot to say that she is one of the nicest dogs ever

Bella looks SOOOO sweet. It is so hard when our beautiful animals get elderly. I hope her medications help her pain.♥

My Aggie is getting up in years also. She has frequent bouts of arthritis when she limps or even whines in pain. Usually an aspirin has a remarkable effect so for the time being we get by.

She looks like my dog who died last November 7th. Gee, it's been almost a year. I feel so bad that we didn't have him put to sleep, as I did with my first dog. I was with her and there was no pain. It truly was the merciful thing to do.

But with Radagast, I was no longer sting enough to take things into my own hands, and DH believes that things should evolve naturally. It was several months of arthritic pain for him, leading to incontinence for several weeks, which DH lovingly took care of. At the end, he stopped eating, and died in his sleep.

If I had unlimited funds I still would not have put him through an MRI, especially since the vet has already told you there wasn't much he'd be able to do. Bella doesn't understand what medical procedures are for. So many of them are uncomfortable - and for what?

I know you didn't ask, but I'd just help her as much as I could. I'd sit with her, give her treats and cuddles, and at some point I'd know when the time was right.

Then I'd cry and be sad for a long time.

I'm sorry you have to go through this, but all pet owners do.

PS. Don't hate me for being so outspoken.

Awwwww sweet Bella. You both will be in our purrs and prayers. xo

We're sending Bella many purrs and good thoughts!

Our neighbor has a lab and the vet has told him there are more options available now for the leg problems - so we're hoping that if you do have to take Bella to the vet, they can help.

My friend went to acupunture for their dog. That's why I'm looking up specialist in our area. She's in Ca ... not sure what's available in my area.

Right now, Bella is napping.

I would curl up to Bella. Would she let me? She looks like such a nice puppy.

JC said...

Noir ~ she would indeed. Riley loves Bella & Maddy Jean. Bella will wait to eat .. if one of the cats is eating her food. Nicest dog ever.

When we bring them home as babies we think they will never grow up or get house trained or stop teething and then - we turn around and their muzzle becomes gray and their walk a bit more slow and we look at the calendar and wonder where they time went and wonder - where were we and how did it happen all so quickly.

Treasure them and love them and hold them while you can. I have raised a few pups in my life and one thing I know for sure - the time slips by silently and our dogs grow old more gracefully than we ever will.

Scout & Freyda ~ So true. I just think that eight is way too young. I'll know more on Monday ...

Having one bad leg is enough to bring any human down, what more a dog that can't speak for itself and is all defenseless. I hope Bella will be fine, and something can be done to help with the pain.

Of course you will be part of my Pay It Forward! I am excited to hear that you would be interested. Now, I will need an address to mail you that something-handmade; if you could send your address to my e-mail over at: juanitatortilla at yahoo dot com. Can't wait to hear from you.

Thank you so much for the shout-out at your blog. I am pleasantly surprised :)

Sweet Bella, what is it with your leg? Maybe it's not that bad after all and time will heal it. And another vet sounds like a good idea, given that this one says there's nothing he can do right from the start. Poor chocolate woofie, get better please.
We wanted to thank you for celebrating our blogoversary with us.
Sending rumbly purrs, Siena & Chilli

I hope that Bella is doing better. She is lucky to have you.

Totally unrelated: After much thought, I finally posted an answer to the question you had asked on my blog ("So why do you live in New Mexico?"). You can see it at http://zeesgowest.blogspot.com/2009/10/so-why-do-we-live-in-new-mexico.html. It is dedicated to you and links to your profile page.

Tuck ~ I'll do that ...

Clairz ~ I'll look that up ...

JC, I am so sorry to hear that Bella is having troubles!! She has such a beautiful face!! This is the hard part about loving our animals - they get old so much faster than we do! I will think of you all!!

Sherri said...

JC I hope Bella gets well really soon! Poor thing!

Hope you feel better soon Bella:)

There comes a time in your life when you walk away from all of the drama and the people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh. Forget the bad and focus on the good. Love the people who treat you right and pray for those who don’t. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is part of life, getting back up is living.
